Mira Xenia Schwerda

Assistant Professor of Art, Art History & Visual Studies

Mira Xenia Schwerda (Ph.D., Harvard University, 2020; M.A., Princeton, 2014) is a historian of photography, print culture, and modern Middle Eastern art and visual culture. She is an Assistant Professor in Art, Art History & Visual Studies at Duke University. Dr. Schwerda is the co-editor of the digital peer-reviewed journal Art in Translation, the co-founder of the Virtual Islamic Art History Seminar Series, and the former managing director and a founding member of the digital humanities initiative Khamseen: Islamic Art History Online. Furthermore, she is the co-director of The Futures of Islamic Art History: Remapping the Field, a Khamseen project supported by the Getty’s Connecting Art Histories Initiative. Her upcoming DAHVC project (starting in fall 2026) will focus on a digital exhibition featuring the transnational history of an overlooked medium: the portable picture postcard.
